Role guide
Hire a Remote Customer Support Specialist
Problem-solvers who troubleshoot product and account issues and turn tickets into resolved customers.
What a customer support specialist does
A customer support specialist resolves issues, usually through tickets, and usually with some technical depth. Where customer service leans on empathy and policy, support leans on diagnosis: reproducing a problem, finding the cause and explaining the fix.
The role is common in software, e-commerce platforms and any business with a product customers need help using.
Typical responsibilities
Triaging and resolving tickets in a help desk
Reproducing issues, gathering logs or screenshots and escalating clean bug reports
Writing and updating help-center articles and macros
Onboarding new customers with walkthroughs and check-ins
Tagging tickets so product and engineering can spot patterns
Managing service-level targets for response and resolution
Skills to look for
Structured troubleshooting: isolating variables before guessing
Clear, friendly, step-by-step writing
Curiosity about how the product works
The judgment to escalate at the right time
Comfort working through a queue without losing quality
Software and tools
Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk or Help Scout
Jira or Linear for bug reports
Loom for recording walkthroughs
Browser developer tools (basic use)
Notion or Confluence for documentation
Experience to look for
Ask for a product they supported and how they learned it. Strong candidates describe specific classes of ticket, not general “helping customers.” A written test, such as replying to three sample tickets, reveals more than a resume.
Interview questions
Walk me through how you would handle a bug report from a customer you can’t reproduce.
How do you decide when to escalate to engineering?
Tell me about a help article you wrote that reduced ticket volume.
How do you keep your tone consistent across a long queue?
What would you do in your first week with a new product?
Describe a ticket that taught you something about a product.
When to hire customer support specialists
Your ticket backlog is growing faster than your team
Product questions are pulling engineers out of focus
You need consistent onboarding for new customers
Hiring customer support specialists internationally
Support teams can follow the sun, but most small companies simply need overlap with their customers. Latin America often suits North American customers, while Philippines-based specialists can cover evenings and early mornings. We define the coverage you need before we begin sourcing.
